The period poops. You know what I’m talking about.

During your menstrual cycle, it is common to experience irregular digestion. You may experience loose and more frequent stool, diarrhea, constipation, or even all of the above.

I recently had a client tell me the only time she is able to have an “easy” bowel movement at home is during her monthly uterine cleanse. She said she hopes to have one or two bowel movements a week for the rest of the month. This is what she has accepted as her normal.

Holistic approaches such as colon hydrotherapy, and peri-steaming can help manage symptoms, making your “normal”, a lot more regular, comfortable, and easy. The therapists at Essential Health are eager to help you with a treatment plan to make your normal a healthy one.

Hormones and digestion

Hormones greatly affect digestion. Fatty acids known as prostaglandins help relax and smooth your uterine lining so it can shed and release an egg. As your uterus relaxes it can have the same effect on the colon, causing more frequent bowel movements, loose stool, or even diarrhea. People with irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut, chron’s, sibo, and other existing digestive issues might have worse symptoms during their monthly cleanse.

Progesterone is another hormone that can affect digestion during your cycle. Progesterones job is to get you ready for pregnancy by thickening the uterus lining. It is common to experience constipation during ovulation when there is more of the hormone present.

Bloating, cramps, and water retention are also common ailments from hormones during your monthly uterine cleanse.

Self-Care treatments to help regulate uncomfortable symptoms and find your healthy normal

Personally, I schedule a colonic treatment the week before my uterine cleanse.

Colon hydrotherapy can help manage pressure from the uterus and colon when they are inflamed. During your cleanse your uterus swells and takes up more room. If you have a lot of hard solid matter in your colon it is likely you will experience more cramping and uncomfortable symptoms during your cleanse. Making room for your uterus by removing hard stool with colon hydrotherapy can help lessen uncomfortable symptoms, give you more energy, and help you sleep.

Consider a Peri-steam treatment or a therapeutic massage for relaxation to help with your cycle as well.

A nutritious diet with foods rich in fiber and vitamins can also help alleviate symptoms during your cycle. It is also very important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to help with regular digestion.

As always, if you have any questions please give us a call for a free consultation to discuss a treatment plan for your unique health and wellness goals.

Namaste.
